What on Earth is Gold-Filled?

I recently released some beautiful gold-filled necklaces, which I love and I thought I'd do a little post explaining what exactly gold-fill is. Because if you're anything like I was a few weeks ago, you won't have the foggiest what it is!
Gold-fill is similar in principal to gold plating, where a layer of gold is deposited onto another metal. The main difference is the amount of gold, and how it is attached to the base metal.
The layer of gold on gold-filled items is 5-10 times thicker than regular gold plated items, and 15-25 times thicker than gold electroplate (see photo below for reference). The core is also a vastly higher quality material than you'll find in a gold plated item.
The way it adheres to the base metal is also different to gold plating. Gold-fill is bonded to the core using heat and pressure. Meaning it won't wear off over time.
